Mathematics...

Here at Dame Elizabeth Cadbury we want all our students to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practise with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing arguments, justifications or proofs, using mathematical language.
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including break down of problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Lessons are planned to engage and meet the needs of all students. Students in all years have 4 hourly lessons of maths per week. All students are entered into GCSE mathematics and have the option to choose GCSE Statistics as one of their option subjects in year 10. Due to the change in nature of results in 2020, we thought it best to highlight our success by using the previous year’s results.

For those students who wish to continue studying mathematics to a higher level, in the sixth form we offer A-Level mathematics, where students have 5 hours of contact time per week. Our results at A-Level mathematics are outstanding: 2017 100% A*-B, 2018 100% A*-A and 2019 100% A*- C.

In the maths department, we believe the students not only develop their learning through the classroom but also through extra-curricular activities. To support this we run numerous trips and a maths club to extend the students learning outside the classroom.
