International Day of Democracy

Schools across Matrix Academy Trust have been recognising the International Day of Democracy (15th September).

International Day of Democracy began in 1997 and it is based on the principles of equality, liberty, and justice. Democracy is essential for human rights and development.

Schools will be considering the meaning behind the international day, but also our modern British values – democracy and individual liberty.

We practise democracy in all of our schools by electing pupils to take on various roles and responsibilities on behalf of their peers including Form Captains, School Council Representatives, Personal Development Ambassadors, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and Careers Champions.

We will be celebrating democracy in our schools across the week by voting for our peers and encouraging our pupils to take on these fulfilling roles for the academic year ahead.

  • T – Together we learn: Reading broadens horizons and helps students persevere through challenges by introducing them to stories of grit, growth, and determination.
  • R – Respectful for all: Our book selection promotes empathy and understanding, helping students appreciate different cultures, perspectives, and experiences.
  • I – Integrity in everything we do:  Engaging with literature helps students build character and make decisions rooted in honesty and moral principles, reinforcing integrity in all areas of life.
  • V – Valuable contribution: By reading, students gain knowledge that enables them to make meaningful and valuable contributions to our school community and the world around them.
  • E – Everyone is equal: Our commitment to inclusivity shines through in our book choices, ensuring that every student feels represented and valued, no matter their background or abilities.

The Book Vending Machine is more than just a fun way to access books—it’s a reflection of our dedication to creating a nurturing environment where students are empowered to explore, grow, and excel. Every book choice encourages independent learning and reminds students that the path to success often begins with a single page.

Pride Month

Dame Elizabeth Cadbury School pupils had a special assembly to mark both Pride Month and School Diversity Week. They took as their Theme of the Week ‘Celebrating Diversity (LGBTQ+)’. The assemblies focused on what we mean by diversity, the idea that everybody is unique and equal and the idea of tolerance and respect. They reminded pupils of the 2010 Equality Act and its protected characteristics to further develop their understanding of the law around discrimination. Pupils were also introduced to role models that celebrate inclusion for different groups and the history of Pride Month. As always, pupils were signposted to further support.
