STEM Discovery Day

On Wednesday this week, we sent 15 of our year 8 pupils to experience a STEM Maths and Science Discovery Day at The University of Birmingham. During the day, Year 8 students discovered different areas of Sicence, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through interactive workshops aimed to inspire, and give them the opportunity to experience life at university. The experience was designed to expose year 8 students to STEM outside of the school environment and to spark excitement around the different subjects and university life.

To continue to promote and reward outstanding attendance, we are running an attendance incentive this half term! If pupils attend every day in the final week of term (21-24th October) and ‘don’t ghost us’, they will receive a treat on Thursday 24th October.

We also want to celebrate progress and therefore, pupils in Years 8-13 with the most improved attendance this half term (compared to Autumn 1 2023) AND 100% attendance in the final week will be invited to visit our hot chocolate pop up bar on Thursday 24th October.

On 1st October 2024, 19 of our A-level maths pupils undertook the UK Maths Trust senior challenge. The UK Maths Trust is the leading British charity that advances the education of young people in mathematics. The UKMT aims to achieve this in particular, but not exclusively, by organising and running mathematics competitions. Fingers crossed for top results! Well done year 13.

Saltmine performance – ‘Switch Up’ – Year 7 and 8

On Friday 20th September we welcomed Saltmine Theatre Company in to DEC to perform ‘Switch Up’ to our year 7 and 8 pupils. This performance and accompanying workshop highlighted the importance of pupils keeping themselves and others safe from knife crime in our community, as part of their PSHE education. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical performance and engaged with the actors during the workshop by asking thought provoking questions.

We were delighted with the turnout for our annual DEC Macmillan coffee morning on Tuesday this week. Parents and pupils in year 7 got together in our DEC diner to have a slice of cake and a cup of tea in aid of this great charity. We are still receiving donations but we are hoping to beat last years funds of £185! Thank you to all who contributed.

Celebration Bournville Community Consultation 2024

Bournville Village Trust (BVT) joined us on our coffee morning this week with year 7 parents and pupils.  Rosaleen and Ruth from BVT spoke to our year 7 and 12 pupils about what our young people think about some key heritage buildings and green spaces in Bournville and how they could better benefit the local community. There is still time for everyone to have a say about some of the heritage sites in Bournville.
